Troop 592
Summer Camp
By Chris P, Troop Historian
We went to Camp Baldwin for our summer camp. As usual, it was a really fun campout. The weather was mostly sun with a few periods of rain, but the rest of the camp was great. The horse corral was popular with people taking horsemanship merit badge or just riding the horses for fun, and the large tents the camp provides were elevated off the ground with wooden
floors, which were very comfortable. We had fun as a troop, including skits at our campfire that were much better than usual. Tom Ford brought along plenty of snacks, which I think everybody liked. And I'm sure the trading post made plenty of money selling candy, pop, and merit badge supplies to our troop. Over all, I don't think I know of anybody that didn't enjoy Baldwin.
New Leadership Group For Troop 592
Summer camp at Baldwin was the scene of spirited Troop elections (and no recounts).

Scouts Learn Cooking Tips at Camp Baldwin
The feelings of camp cooks are easily hurt. Here are some rules for treating camp cooks properly.
Annual Winter Lodge Wood Cut is September 15
In order for the Troop to get a slot at Winter Lodge for a "campout" we need to have volunteers to attend the Wood Cut on Sept. 15. We need two or three adult volunteers along with at least two scouts to be at the Aubrey Waztek Lodge from 8:00am-Noon on Sept. 15. Please let Lou Paff know·if we do not have volunteers there, we donât get to go to Winter Lodge. We need to send you with a check and some specific dates to try to get out of the "lottery" for available dates.
Troop 592 Sets First Fall Backpack
Saturday and Sunday, September 22-23 Troop 592 will journey off to Cape Mears for a great backpack trip on the spit separating Tillamook Bay from the Pacific Ocean. This hopes to be a repeat of one of the best campouts of the year! This time around, the Troop is also looking for a couple parents who have boats and would be willing to launch in Garibaldi and ferry over water, some extra gear and to ferry out the trash that we pick up. Access to a crab pot would be good, too.
Jamboree Web Page Available
Check out the following web page for the National Jamboree. Four of our scouts (Drew S, Hunter H, Garrett W, and Evan T) were in this Troop that kept a current web page during their 17 days on the East coast.
Troop 592 High Adventure Web Page
Lou Paff created this web page one day after returning back from the San Juan High Adventure. Check it out·it even has movies.
Scoutmaster Corner
Welcome Back Scouts!!
I hope you all had a good summer. Summer camp at Baldwin was great. We also had 8 scouts attend the National Jamboree in July, 9 scouts and 5 adults go on High Adventure bicycling and sea kayaking in the San Juan Islands in August , at least two scouts went to "Rover" camp at Camp Meriwether, and one scout spent two weeks as a "Staff in Training" at Camp Baldwin. In addition to all the advancement at Baldwin, we also had two scouts complete their Eagle projects and turn in their Eagle Applications. (Sean M and Michael C·Good Work!)
I am excited with our new leadership group. I think they will have some great new ideas and will develop their leadership skills in a short period of time. I look forward to working with these young men as they try out some new ideas and different leadership styles.
Now it is time to begin school again and we start up our Troop meetings. Our first meeting will be next Monday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 at Valley Presbyterian Church. Please be there·we will get the year going strong and plan for our first campout. We will be backpacking out on Cape Mears on the weekend of Sept. 22-23. Last year this was one of the best campouts of the year!
We are trying to keep our good link with the church. This year we will do a few things differently·after each meeting, some scouts will get the opportunity to sweep the gym floor so we can leave it cleaner than we found it. Scouts and parents, we have been asked to no longer sit on the carts of tables along the east wall of the gym as they have had some corners broken. Everyone should use the outside gym door to access the gym. We need to stay out of the rest of the church except for Parent Meetings downstairs. Please help us do our part. We also will now purchase our own basketballs and "Dodge" balls and keep them in the shack instead of using the churchâs supply.
I was very pleased with the amount of advancement that was accomplished at summer camp and believe that our new scouts will continue to advance quickly. I am also excited about the amount of Life Scouts that we have that will be pushing toward their Eagle Rank this year. Our troop benefits with all this "experience" around.
See you on Sept. 10. And bring your friends, particularly any of them that might have missed summer camp and are hesitant to come·we will have a great year and have lots of fun!
